Interview: Exclusive Interview with Top Nollywood Actress, Ejiro Okurame
Runo Reuben conducted an interview with top nollywood actress, Ejiro Okurame. In the interview she talked about many issues affecting upcoming stars, Nigerian Politics, and a message to her state, Delta.
How does it fell like to be a celebrity?
Yea, it feels nice, there's nothing there. To me, it's just a normal life because my life as a celebrity is not different from my life as an average person. It is normal though there are a little bit of changes and you know, behaviours one need to put up most times in public, I am somebody who, uh, I'm very natural, I don't pretend, what I so as an average person is what I do as a celebrity.
what is the best moment in your life?
Everyday I wake up in my life is a very good moment for me. It's not easy to go to bed and wake up alive. It's not an easy thing. I didn't pay for this life I'm living. It's just that our Lord Jesus Christ died on the Cross an has preserved my life unto this very moment. So everyday of my life is very special to me. There is no particular moment that I will say, ok, eh, thank God for today… everyday I thank God for my life and also the life of my family and friends.
As a role model to many young Nigerians, what do you have to say to them, who are striving to be like you?
Well, first of all, I just need to let them know that, they need to be very prayerful, they need to be focused, they need to be determined. One major problem I know I have seen, you know, in recent times is that most people that wants to come into acting and production are always in a haste. There are a lot of desperate girls out there, there are a lot of lazy boys out there. They don't want to work. They just feel, ok, if I do one or two movies, I will become a star, I will earn so-so amount of money, eh, this minister is going to see me, this governor will meet me…. It is not like that. The people you see up there paid their dues. There is a prize tag for everything, you understand? Not that they did something terrible or something too good but they went according to how things are done. It is a gradual process. As a child, you don't just start walking, you crawl. First, when you crawl, you start to stand, you try to walk before want to like run. They don't just give birth to you as a child and you start running. It's not done anywhere! There are a lot of experience that need to be done while on set. You don't buy such experiences; you need to experience the yourself. It is a gradual thing. If you know you are not prepared for this journey, there is no point coming because the moment you feel you are on top of the sky or whatever, when the ladder is removed, you fall down crashing. So every artist you see up there has in one way or the other paid their dues with hard work.
If you were to be a country, which country would you be?
(Laughing) The only thing is that I would not just love to be my country. I would also want to put a lot of things right. Though I am proud to be a Nigerian and I'm proud to come from this part of the world, despite the short-comings we have like issue of unemployment, security and all that. I would not just say I would love to be called a Nigerian but I also want to put things right. There are a lot of things that are so wrong. We are living just by His grace. A lot of people have died in the past and we are lucky to be alive to testify and make amendments and corrections. If I will come back to this world again, I will love to come back as a Nigerian BUT a lot of things must be put in place, a lot of Nigerians are suffering and dying, I don't like it and I'm not comfortable with it.
What are your views in Nigeria Politics?
I'm indifferent. Whoever must lead us, must lead us right. Whoever must govern us, must govern us right. Some of our leaders were not really voted in, you understand, when the masses vote you in, they expect you to be their voice, their helper not that when they vote you in, you forget about them. As a leader you need to represent well.
Thank you for your time. It has been a nice moment with you. what do you have to say to me?
(Laughing) Una well done o. Thank you very much and it's a pleasure having an interview with you and I hope you are not like other journalist that will publish the wrong story that's why I have been running away from interviews for a long time. A lot of people have been calling me. I have so many questions on my email. I manage to reply one, I have been running away because they give the wrong headline and send a wrong signal to the people and that's what I don't like.
What about your state?
The people from Delta should encourage our people from there. There is no encouragement for Deltan Artistes. No encouragement whatsoever. I repeat, no encouragement. They don't help out artists. Deltan entertainers are not happy! I stand to speak. They should call me and I will say it in front of any of them. They don't carry our artist along. The little favour I get are from outside Delta State. I don't get anything from Delta State and it's a shame.
We are to work towards that. Once again, thank you for your time.
You are welcome.
